How does this project fit into the Faculty ?
The project is fully inscribed as a supplementary component within the Faculty. It brings together existing potentials, rationalises them, connects them up and reorganises them with the aim of uniting the active forces, to undertake and develop an action (in reaction) in response to the problem of the transition from secondary education to the university.
Drawing on student, teacher and researcher potential, adapting resources to circumstances, opening eyes, accepting to call oneself into question and go back to the drawing board in order to face up to the challenges of today and tomorrow: these are the means inherent that a project such as this one intends to use to assist the quality of the specific scientific training required and to thus take part in the blossoming of tomorrow’s humanity and society.
The Faculty of Sciences…in two words: meeting the environmental and technological challenges of tomorrow
One of the major roles of our Faculty is to train high level scientists and to lead them to acquire the capacities to adapt, analyse and cultivate a spirit of critique which will enable their abilities and skills to evolve and develop, in order to overcome the ever more complex and sensitive challenges of tomorrow.
"Real science is an ignorance which one is aware of"
At a time when environmental and technological debates are constantly overrunning the various media, in an era when easy access to the internet inundates the information society in all its aspects, during a period when debates over teaching are complicating the horizon, it is becoming more and more urgent to raise awareness and concerns amongst young people. The questions and demands are countless, flooding in from all parts, and affect everyone, no matter the position and situation they find themselves in.
"Real science is an ignorance which one is aware of"
For young people it is even more vital that they become aware as they are arriving at a turning point in their lives, at a point at which their choices will weigh on their future, at a moment where their liberty will burst through and impose itself, in one way or another, without them always being aware of it and being able to measure the consequences.
How ?
What can we do, the University’s teachers-researchers ?
Researchers...
We have to be ever more effective in research, in having our institution and its researchers make its mark on the regional, national and international level through the quality and innovation of its work and the results of its teams, through the joint projects it is involved in across the spectrum of subjects.
Teachers...
We can welcome in students and offer our experience, show that the challenges are ‘the daily bread’ at every level and that far from being discouraged, they permit a strengthening, in opening their eyes in order to open other eyes, in order to ceaselessly move forward and build, no matter the starting point and beyond the pitfalls.
"Real science is an ignorance which one is aware of"
Welcoming in the students. Yes, but not just any old how. With a project which is clear and structured, realistic in its daily management, based on a high level science education and the forming of citizens well versed in having a critical spirit, calling themselves into question, self-evaluation, etc.
Thus it is also a challenge for us: analysing and restructuring our own proper welcome, the beginning of our own curriculum, according to observations and analysis carried out since several years on the plus points and the failings. The ‘1,2,3…Sciences!’ is the fruit of a collegiate thinking through process. It puts into practice clear actions, with a precise goal, and offers structured pathways in order to adapt to current circumstances.
Concretely, since September 2008…
A common core programme of 30 credits (out of the 60 in the 1st Bachelors year), in the first quadrimestre :
General Mathematics - 30h Th + 30h Pr
Physics - 30h Th + 30h Pr
Chemistry - 30h Th + 30h Pr
Biology - 30h Th + 30h Pr
Introduction to Geography and Geology - 10h Th
English (partim) - 22,5h Th
ou will find the course schedule on the site devoted to 1, 2, 3...Sciences!. Teaching supervisors and support providers can also find on it the documents and general information related to the concrete and practical development of 1, 2, 3...Sciences! (updated practically on a daily basis).
The volume of subject matter in this quadrimestre is reduced (in comparison with the previous programme) but the demands of university education are retained.
The rest of the following curriculum is adapted to this reform: the course programmes of each study pathway and educational programme have been developed to maintain the support structures provided and the same level of science education.
